Original Paintings

Whimsical. Nostalgic. Slightly Surreal. Simply Enchanting.

My mixed media and oil paintings are a contemporary take on 18th century Romanticism with narratives illuminated by the whimsical and surreal.

I invite you to step into these dream-like worlds with me.  Celestial skies and serene waters melt into abstract textures and patterns and vibrant colors engage your imagination.

My love of all things retro and vintage as well as my own personal memories, passion for travel and awe of nature inform my artistic vision.  I blend these elements into powerful narratives that invite you to see beyond what you see, and think beyond what you already know.

I believe art can speak to places in us we didn’t even know existed.  It meets us where we are and allows us to discover it at our own pace.  I feel, through my art, I can addresses heavy topics with a sensitive perspective that speaks of understanding and pries open the door of hope.

Summertime

Acrylic and Oil on Canvas

24” x 48”, $1800 (unframed)

A blessing of my childhood was time spent on my grandparent's farm. Here my brother and I found endless adventure from hayloft to pasture and the woods in between. Here, the watermelon was sweeter, the creek was cooler and the night sky was bigger. Here there was room to dream.

Burn the Ships

Acrylic and Oil on Canvas

40” x 30”, $1800 (without frame)

Memories-Burdens-Habits-Scars.  In daily, subconscious ritual we put on the weight of these things. Under the load we struggle, get crushed or find a way to lighten the load. Sometimes we must burn the ships and sever the ties in order to move forward.  Here there is a dichotomy in the use of delicate paper boats as the carrier of the weighty load.  It personifies the similar dichotomy of the power that can be found in letting go. In the releasing, our hands become free to receive.  In this painting the child has released the things she carried and has found a new treasure.  In the distance, the buildings she once saw as ruins transform into a palace of possibilities.

the good father

Acrylic and Oil on Canvas

36” x 24”

Inspired by my neighbor's interactions with his child and my relationship with my own father, I sought to illuminate what this kind of love feels like. A small, tender act exploding into into vibrant color. The attention of a good father instilling confidence and enabling his child to dream and hope.

Spilled Milk

Acrylic and Oil on Canvas

24” x 24”, $750 (unframed)

I loved watching the syndicated reruns of the Donna Reed show on Nick@nite in the 1980’s.  A shy, awkward girl was in awe of this beautiful woman who shared in mutual adoration with her successful pediatrician husband, raised amazing children and managed all the tasks of running her home with never a hair out of place or a cross word spoken.  She made me dream of being a stay-at-home mom.  Life has had other plans for me, and aside from managing the tasks of a household, we have very little in common.  Here, the Donna Reed-esque angel looks upon the mess before her.  The spilled milk, a metaphor for the unfulfilled childhood dream is overshadowed by the vibrant, explosive color of the beautiful and adventurous life that has been built in its place.

Vantage Point

Acrylic and Oil on Canvas

16” x 20” SOLD

This painting straddles the line between whimsical and surreal.  The theme was inspired by a friend who was blindsided by a life-altering event.  I saw one of the most rock solid people I knew shaken to her core.  While devastating then, and still a provider of painful memories today, time and distance have allowed her to climb to a new vantage point and see from a new perspective.  Not only are the frogs illustrated in varying proportions but the buildings also have a slightly skewed perspective. These were intentional decisions to support the theme that things are not always as they appear and often a matter of viewpoint.  I frequently use animals as the subjects in my work to make it more approachable to viewers.  They may initially be drawn in by the whimsical nature of the piece but find themselves lingering to ponder what it means.

the escape

Acrylic and Oil on Canvas

12” x 12”

This resourceful raccoon has found a most valuable tool. His yellow umbrella of hope shelters him from the storm and catches the winds propelling him in new directions. When we embrace hope, our adventure begins. With hope we can weather any storm and sail to new heights.

vision

Acrylic and Oil on Paper

24” x 18”

This is a self-portrait. Like an owl’s vast visual range, I have a broad sensitivity range. I sense people’s feelings and emotions often understanding them better than they do.  Silent in flight, owls can swoop in undetected.  In a group I am typically quiet, but when I do speak it’s insightful (or funny) and suddenly people realize my presence.

the presence

Acrylic and Oil on Canvas

24” x 18”

This painting depicts myself as a child experiencing nature, God's creation. The hawk, with its keen vision and sense of direction represents the presence of God. It is flying ahead of me, streaming royal purple ribbons announcing I am a daughter of the King. When I explore or reflect on the nature's infinite gifts a sense of belonging and being loved wells up within me. It becomes impossible to deny God's love for me when I see what he has made for me to enjoy.
